The essence of good water resources to human existence can never be overemphasized. Water resources management plays a vital role to ensure the future of humankind. Various uses of water has contributed to shortage in supply of water resources, which therefore calls for proper management. in the absence of water security, no government can boast of food security, environment and safe future of humankind in any society.

Ondo state government, over the years have suffered form inadequate supply of portable water that has led many individual into seeking alternative from unhygienic sources, which have exposed majority to waterborne diseases.

Having noticed the short supply of water in the State and its negative outcome, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, drew the attention of the federal government to come to the aid of the state by extending its water policy, as the major urban water supply can no longer provide enough water for the teeming population.

The governor also went out of the way to ensure water security in the state through the introduction of “KAMOMI AKETI”, a water project initiative that is designed to solve the need of portable water supply across the 18 local government areas in the State.

Statistics released by the Ondo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) shows the number of both hand pump and boreholes constructed in the various communities across the state since the introduction of the project, has a total number of 707 Hand pump and 215 Boreholes construction in the state.

This project gained recognition from the federal government, as a model state for its cost management. The federal government also plans to adopt the strategy for the ongoing PEWASH policy of boreholes rehabilitation across the federation.

The national coordinator of Federal government PEWASH initiative, Mrs. Jummai Umar-Wakasso, commended the state government for such innovative idea, as she reminded that the federal government would adopt the policy of KAMOMI AKETI.
She explained, “Ondo State model is cost effective and community driven, the federal government have been spending 400, 000 naira to rehabilitate one hand pump borehole contracted out compared to the 81,000 naira been used by the state through the Ondo Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) TEAM to rehabilitate same”.

Ondo state has also benefited from the federal government PEWASH initiative, which has led to the construction of 489 boreholes in six different local government of the state.

The rural dwellers no longer face the challenges that come with water resources as they enjoy steady water supply in their different communities.

This shows that governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, scheme towards the provision of portable water for the citizenry is effective and has succeeded in curbing the mayhem of shortage of water supply in the state with proper management of resources.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, is a man who does not play politics with words, he promised rural development and he has fulfilled his promise.
